I.   DESCRIPTION


     This course will offer a global perspective of the syntactic subsystem of the English language, examining in
     detail the diverse kinds of syntactic relations that operate in English syntagms, its components and functions.



II.  OBJECTIVES


     General
     1.      To develop a critical attitude towards the syntactic phenomena of the English language.
     2.      To examine different perspectives of grammatical organization.
     3.      To compare and contrast different types of syntactic analysis.

    Specific
     1.      To describe, analyze y use the different syntactic patterns of the English language.
     2.      To recognize and describe the diverse relationships generated by different syntactic formations and the
             semantic effects resulting from them.
     3.      To recognize and explain different functions y uses in different syntactic formations.
     4.      To analyze sentences according to different grammatical theories.
     5.      To analyze syntactic structure from different perspectives: structural, transformational, IC's, etc.
     6.       To apply theoretical concepts to concrete problems in authentic texts

             1.3    Of complementation.
             1.4    Of coordination.

    2.       Syntactic formations.
             2.1    The complex Noun phrase.
             2.2    The complex Verbal Phrase.
             2.3    The Adjectival Phrase.
             2.4    The Adverbial Phrase.
             2.5    Noun Clauses.
             2.6    Adjectival Clauses.
             2.7    Adverbial Clauses.

    3.       The sentence as a textual unit.
             3.1    Functional perspective.
             3.2    Structural perspective.
             3.3    Generative perspective.
             3.4    Types of sentences.
             3.5    The problem of ambiguity.
             3.6    Immediate Constituent Analysis.
