I. DESCRIPTION

In this course the students will learn how verbal interpersonal communication participates in issues of language development, cognitive and social development and in the processes of building personal and professional identities. Special attention will be given to both oral and written communication practices in second language pedagogy and to the contribution of interactive conversational behaviour in the development of relational skills. Students will evaluate the advantage of using interdisciplinary conceptual frames and observation tools to interpret and solve problems in real life situations where language use plays a central role. Concepts from disciplines other than linguistics, particularly from psychology, sociology, pedagogy, anthropology and intercultural studies will be brought to the class discussion of the applied linguistics and communication topics.


II. OBJECTIVES

Generals:

1. On the basis of readings and discussions learners are expected to produce a general frame for their personal understanding of the core notions in areas that connect  linguistics studies and communication studies: the role symbolic practices in social development, interdependence between acquiring language competence and the nature and quality of available verbal communicative  interaction, and verbal communication in the acquisition and creation of knowledge and the development of personal and group identity.

2. To apply current conceptual frames in Applied Linguistics and Communication Studies in order to analyse, interpret and evaluate successful and unsuccessful verbal communication practices in the fields targeted in this course.


Specifics:

1. To characterize, analyse and discuss issues and case studies in the applied fields of L1 and L2 school pedagogy for small children, adolescents and adults.

2. To characterize, analyse and discuss issues and case studies in the applied field of communication practices in building work place relationships.  

3. To gain habits of critical thinking and become involved in rigorous, focused and productive group work.


III. CONTENTS

1. Current accounts of language knowledge communicative competence and the notion of language proficiency.

2. Beliefs about language and communication used  to guide practices and take decisions in school teaching contexts

3. Language and the process of building and sharing experiences in individuals and groups 

4. Language acquisition and the development of communication skills.

5. Language acquisition and development of thinking skills.

6. Communication issues in instructional  practices to develop  first and  second language literacy 

7. Diversity in communication skills: An educational challenge.

8. Information gathering, information management skills and communicative skills connected with academic performance.


IV. METHODOLOGY

- Lectures which introduce support and round up personal readings and group work.
- Individual work (critical reading of texts and class work)
- Group work (discussion and application of  texts and team work for oral presentations)
- Permanent interaction and communication between teacher, assistant and students


V. EVALUATION

- Group presentations.
- Take-home test.
- Pop quizzes.
- Research paper.
