I. DESCRIPTION

This course will seek to explore the diversity of goals and methodologies in the area of contrastive analysis
and to evaluate the contribution of contrastive analysis to problems in syllabus and material design,
translation tasks, interpretation of errors in interlanguage, and in the selection of teaching strategies.

II. OBJECTIVES

     General
     1. To relate contrastive language descriptions and comparative stylistics in intra and inter language
            contexts.
     2. To compare specific structures used in both languages at phonological, morphological, syntactic,
semantic, and textual levels and to identify the resources available to express equivalent thoughts.
     3. To develop the bilingual competence necessary to reflexively detect and correct interference problems.
     4. To explain the areas of similitude and contrast in the organization of both linguistic systems, in the
            various levels.

     Specific
     1. To gain awareness of the phonological differences and similarities of the Spanish and English linguistic
            systems.
     2. To detect and anticipate interference problems in developing competence in the foreign language.
     3. To know and explain the structural problems derived from negative transfer in developing linguistic
            competence.
     4. To learn to apply compensation strategies in learning to use equivalent resources in the two languages.
     5. To learn to accommodate textual resources to suit stylistic requirements.
