DESCRIPTION This course aims at providing students with a thorough presentation of the ample reaches of Applied Linguistics, especially those that pertain the areas of language acquisition/learning and translation. These reaches are seen in the light of proposals forwarded through recent research, so that students can contribute by means of their own research to the areas studied. II. OBJECTIVES General: 1. To know and appreciate the value and usefulness of linguistic knowledge when applied to the study of communication. Specifics: 1. To differentiate and appreciate the notions of knowing a language, knowing about a language, acquiring a language, learning a language and teaching a language. 2. To know possible applications of Linguistics to different fields where communication is of primarily importance. 3. To raise linguistic awareness when solving problems related to the teaching of foreign languages and translation. 4. To gain habits of critical thinking and become involved in rigorous, focused and productive individual and group work. III. CONTENTS 1. Language and Communication. 1.1 Knowing a language. 1.2 Linguistic knowledge. 1.3 Grammatical competence. 1.4 Linguistic competence. 1.5 Communicative competence. 2. Criteria for appropriate language use, grammatical correctness, fluency and register, style considering variables such as age and context. 3. The application of linguistic knowledge to other areas of study. 3.1 Translation. 3.2 Clinical linguistics. 3.3 Information design. 3.4 Forensic linguistics. 3.5 Foreign language teaching.
