I. DESCRIPTION

The four-course sequence of the English Language courses, in the first four semesters of the Licenciatura en Letras Inglesas, attempts to develop the four skills pertaining to the learning of a foreign language in progressive levels of proficiency.


II. OBJECTIVES

General:

1. To develop the language skills and competencies necessary to interact effectively in a range of situations at an advanced level of proficiency.


Specific:

1. To listen comprehensively to a variety of authentic texts.

2. To apply listening strategies to the further development of speaking skills.

3. To interact in a range of everyday situations using appropriate structure and vocabulary.

4. To read comprehensively texts of different lengths and with an increasing degree of complexity, comparing, evaluating and synthesizing their contents.

5. To read literary and historical texts critically and regard them in the light of their historical moments.

6. To produce critical argumentative texts regarding the reading seen in class.

7. To increase lexical availability.

8. To develop awareness of cultural issues and develop critical thinking.

9. To listen to and read a variety of authentic texts with the purpose of  getting used to answering different exam questions and improving their receptive skills. 

10. To interact in pre- and post- listening and reading activities using appropriate structure and vocabulary.

11. To produce written texts of different nature and length using appropriate format and structures.

1. Lexical contents

1.1 Vocabulary related to talking about language learning and classes.

1.2 Vocabulary related to job description.

1.3 Vocabulary related to description of places.

1.4 Vocabulary related to aspects of law.

1.5 Vocabulary related to food preparation.

1.6 Idioms related to work.

1.7 Vocabulary related to disasters and natural phenomena.

1.8 Vocabulary related to parts of the body and collocations used in physical descriptions.

1.9 Vocabulary related to health and well-being.

1.10 Vocabulary related to politics and elections.

1.11 Vocabulary related to weather and weather problems.

1.12 Vocabulary related to challenging activities and changes.

1.13 Vocabulary related to personal qualities and skills.

1.14 Idioms related to relationships.

1.15 Words related to the quality of life.


2. Grammatical contents.

2.1 Modifying nouns and adjectives.

2.2 Comparison of adjectives.

2.3 Adverbs to describe jobs.

2.4 Modal verbs must, may, might, could, needn?t.

2.5 Imperative Mode.

2.6 Reported speech.

2.7 Auxiliaries.

2.8 Passive to describe actions someone else performs for us.

2.9 Sentences starting with what.

2.10 Word building and collocations.

2.11 Conditional sentences.

2.12 Punctuation.

2.13 Gerunds and infinitives.

3. Functional contents.

3.1 Describing people.

3.2 Talking about work.

3.3 Describing places.

3.4 Describing judicial systems.

3.5 Talking about food and food preparation.

3.6 Talking about and describing disasters.

3.7 Debating about the importance of self care.

3.8 Describing political parties and talking about elections.

3.9 Talking about environmental problems.

3.10 Discussing Shopping.

3.11 Talking about relationships.

3.12 Talking about world economics.

3.13 Writing texts of different genres.

3.14 Listening for gist, detail and note taking.


IV. METHODOLOGY

- Sessions concentrate on developing comprehension and production skills.
- Exposing students.
- Activities related to the discussion of texts.
- Sessions focus on developing the language and skills.


V. EVALUATION

- 2 Written tests.
- Mid-Term Exam (written & oral).
