I.   DESCRIPTION

     The course English Language attempts to develop, in the first four semesters of the Licenciatura, the four
     abilities pertaining to the learning of a foreign language in progressive levels of difficulty.


II.  OBJECTIVES

     General:
     1. To develop the four linguistic skills -receptive and productive- at an intermediate level of proficiency.

     Specific:
     1.      To listen comprehensively to a variety of authentic and adapted texts.
     2.      To get acquainted with the sound system of English.
     3.      To identify, discriminate, reproduce and produce the sounds of English.
     4.      To check the pronunciation of difficult words in specialized pronunciation dictionaries.
     5.      To improve their auditory discrimination as a pre-requisite to their own performance, and to (auto)
             evaluate their own/someone else's performance.
     6.      To identify a variety of written and oral texts: informative, descriptive, narrative and argumentative.
     7.      To interact in a range of everyday situations using appropriate structure and vocabulary.
     8.      To produce descriptive and narrative oral and written texts, regarding everyday events.
     9.      To read comprehensively texts of different lengths and with an increasing degree of complexity,
             applying skimming and scanning strategies.
     10.     To increase lexical availability.
     11.     To develop awareness of cultural issues and develop critical thinking

IV. METHODOLOGY

    -   Exposure to a variety of activities aiming at practicing vocabulary and language structures in
        communicative contexts.
    -   Reading and discussion of texts.
    -   Group and peer interaction on given topics.
    -   Production of written and oral texts.
    -   Lab sessions.
    -   Interactive and reflective teaching.


V.  EVALUATION

    -   Written Test 1: 10%
    -   Written Test 2: 10%
    -   Mid-Term Exam (written): 25%
    -   Additional Modules: 15%
    -   Final Exam (oral): 40%
