I. DESCRIPTION

The course presents a general view of the current scientific understanding of the Universe with its components, including basic notions on its physical and observational fundaments.


II. OBJETIVES

1. To stimulate in the student an understanding of the inner workings, composition, size and evolution of the Universe in which we live.


III. CONTENTS

1. Scales of the Universe.

2. Movement of celestial bodies. 

3. Measurement of time in astronomy.

4. Celestial coordinates. 

5. Movement of the planets. The Solar System. Extrasolar planets. 

6. The light. 

7. Telescopes. 

8. The Sun. 

9. The stars. Stellar evolution. 

10. Stellar systems (clusters, galaxies). 

11. Evolution of the Universe. 


IV. METHODOLOGY

- Lectures.
- Tutorial sessions.
- Observations at the UC Observatory.


V. EVALUATION

- Partial tests.
- Projects and/or homework assignments.
- Final exam.
